INTRODUCTION
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
The Missionary Sisters for the Poorest of the Poor is a female Religious congregation with a special Charism- selfless service to the poorest of the poor. At present we are working in two countries. Relying on divine providence the sisters strive:
a / To uplift the dignity of the marginalized women, prostitutes and unwedded mothers.
b / To identify with the poorest of the poor and take up their cause in every possible way.
C / To shelter, clothe, feed and care for those who are destitute, orphans, street children, the aged, the hopeless poor.
d / The sisters do educate and rehabilitate those they serve by, helping them to return to their families and to become productive workforce in society.
e/ visit prisoners and lepers, and care for their spiritual and material needs.
f / They strive to create an environment of freedom and acceptance where both the oppressor and the oppressed, the friend and the foe, could choose to change and be reconciled in Christ:
g/ They also provide clinical services, guidance, counselling care and support to the sick.
In 2012, through the invitation of the Bishop of Yendi Diocese Most Rev Vincent Sowah Boi-Nai in (SVD), the Missionary Sisters for the Poorest of the Poor arrived in Ghana to being their Missionary work among the marginalized women (alleged to be witched): There are five witch camps in Yendi Diocese, Gushegu camp, Gani camp, Kpatinga camp, Naboli camp and Kukkuo camp. The total numbers of these marginalised women in the Witch Camps are about 800.We do visit them in the Camps on Saturdays and Tuesdays in order to teach them Catechism, songs and conduct Sunday Services for them. We provide health care to them for minor illnesses. Health talk is giving to them base on personal hygiene, etc. Food and clothing are distributed to them when available.
In addition to the above, the sisters are involved in caring for a number of girls drop out from school besides, Teenage pregnancy is high. This is due to financial difficulties and cultural discrimination against women. Women do not have the same opportunity in life like men. During these Eight years we have been in Ghana, we have succeeded in encouraging more girls in school which is the hope for the Region.
Furthermore, pastoral apostolate is part of our mission in Ghana. The Sisters go to the senior High School Friday evening for Catechism instruction and also teach the students how to pray the Rosary as well as other prayers. Also, the sisters motivate the Christian mothers and organize talks for them. The sisters are also involved in teaching Children and Adults Catechism. About thirty children were baptised and received Holy Communion during the year.
More so, visiting the people around us in Gushegu Community has become part of the Missionary Sisters for the Poorest of the Poor routine. We visit the families and encourage them to send their children to school especially the girls, teaching them the best way to plan and manage their family and giving them marriage counselling.
GUSHEGU IS A TOWN UNDER CHRIST THE KING CHURCH PARISH
Gushegu is a town in the Diocese of Yendi Northern Religion of Ghana .The main occupation of the people in this area is subsistence farming. The weather also does not favour their farming activities since they have only one raining season with a very prolonged dry season in a year. The indigenous people in this area are the Dogombas. For the people to be Dogombas means to be a Muslim. The literacy level of the people is very low. The Diocese of Yendi is constraining financially; likewise the people here are simple subsistent farmers, eating what they grow and growing what they eat. Nevertheless, they support the Church through gifts of goats, sheep, chickens and at times farm products like yams and vegetables. Also, they are ready to do communal labour when called upon to do so.
Generally, the people may be classified among the Poorest of the Poor. Education is low patronized in the community due to the high level of poverty among the populace. The sad news is that children who are supposed to be in Kindergarten/Nursery school before entering primary level are found roaming in the streets of the community.
THE NEED FOR SCHOOL
1 There is no structure call school for the children; the children are using the sister’s convent corridors as class room.
2 The isolated children from the Allergies Witches camp will have no access to education.
3 If there is a school for the children, the sisters will have relaxed mind because throughout the school time the compound is very noisy and uncomfortable
4 It will reduce stigmatization, inferiority complex from the Allergies Witches children.
CHALLENGE
The absence of a proper structure for the Kindergarten/Nursery School in the Community possesses a great challenge to parents who wish to send their children to pre-school before entering the primary school.
The orphans, vulnerable children, and the Alleged Witches children under the care of the Missionary Sisters for the Poorest of the Poor are not finding it easy. The convent corridor using by the children cannot protect them from sun and rain.
THE REQUEST
It is in this light that, the Missionary sisters for the Poorest of the Poor is requesting for your support to put up three class room block, office, store and a library for Infant Jesus Academy Kindergarten Gushegu, Yendi. This will enable the Sisters to give Quality education to the village children, the orphans and the less privileged.
We would be grateful if your Agency would be able to assist us with GHC 438,545.918 to construct Classrooms for the children. Its equivalent in Euros is 69,610.46.
